About Pink Warriors
Pink Warriors supports children when a parent battles breast cancer — through books, community events, and mental health resources.
Pink Warriors was founded in December 2023 by Julia Penan, a high school student in Westchester, New York.
In March 2026, Pink Warriors was awarded a 2026–27 grant from Pink Aid to fund distribution of Ring the Bell! to families across Connecticut.
In Julia's Words
“I wrote Ring the Bell! to help children feel less alone when a parent has breast cancer.”
The Book
Ring the Bell! is a children's book written by Julia Penan and illustrated by Lisa Cummings for children whose parent is undergoing breast-cancer treatment. Julia wrote it after her mother's diagnosis, drawing on what she experienced when she was nine.
The story follows a child as she tries to understand her mother's diagnosis and treatment. It describes fear and uncertainty, talking to a therapist, playing games, and finding support in family and friends.
Ring the Bell! was published in October 2024 (English paperback ISBN 9798991623308). It is also published in Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and Chinese. Read more about the book.
Sister Organization
Outnumbered, founded by Zachary Penan, is a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps children stand up to bullying.
